Welcome to Toledo’s first gated community - Birckhead Place.  Registered on the National Register of Historic Places, this neighborhood celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2007.  According to a 2007 Toledo Blade article celebrating the neighborhood's centenial, just after Birckhead Place was formed, one resident waged a long court fight to try to keep neighbors from building garages because the automobile was considered too noisy and dirty for such an elegant neighborhood.

Today, Birckhead still exemplifies early 20th century stateliness but it is often overshadowed by the Old West End or Westmorland neighborhoods.  Sure, Birckhead struggles with problems ranging from neglected properties, declining house values, and sunken-in brick roads but this private community remains strong and proud of their neighborhood.
